Explaining aphid control on farm

There is lots of interesting science in agriculture especially in the control of insect pests. It is important to explain it to farm visitors in an interesting and accessible way.

Dr Mark Stevens of the British Beet Research Organisation gets out of the lab and into a field of sugar beet, where he explains the magic of science in farming.

He brings aphids – and all the problems they cause to crops – to life. He shows what they look like and how they feed and transmit viruses from leaf to leaf. The impact on yield, the importance of aphid control and how beneficial insects like ladybirds help are also explained with a clever and light touch.
