How insect workers help

In amongst the rows of tall tomato plants at Cornerways Nursery there are thousands of bumble bees hard at work.

Matt Ware loves to explain how all these bumble bees are essential in producing 180 million tomatoes a year.

He takes visitors between the rows of tomato plants to see where his insect workers live and what he does to make life – and work pollinating tomato flowers – as easy as possible for his bees.

Matt makes sure to make the connection between the bees, the flowers and delicious bright red tomato fruits.

He also points out that lots of farmers rely on creatures to help with their farming – whether that’s earthworms in the soil, or dogs to round up the sheep.
